Lori La Bey, Founder of Alzheimer’s Speaks

Published on 04/05/2018

What is your life’s purpose?
My mission is to shift our care culture from crisis to comfort, by providing education, support and inspiration to individuals, organizations and communities dealing with care systems and services. My goal is to offer accessible and affordable information, products and tools as well as collaborate with others to expand resources to help those in need.

How are you living your purpose?
I have committed my life to actively address my purpose through my organization, Alzheimer’s Speaks, a Minnesota-based advocacy group and media outlet providing education and support for those dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Alzheimer’s Speaks is geared to raise all voices in shared thought and actions; to uplift, expand creativity, and diminish the negative side of competition while building collaborative efforts to improve our world. We do this via keynote speeches, my website, blog, radio show, video interviews, YouTube channel, and social media platforms.

How did you find your purpose?
My mother lived with dementia for 30 years. Her journey changed my course in this world. My mom’s disease was the biggest gift I will ever receive in my life. She taught me many beautiful life lessons, which apply to all aspects of life and which I now get to share with the world. What an honor it is to love what you do and empower others to live graciously with and alongside dementia.

What advice do you have for purpose seekers?
Don’t fight what intrigues you and brings you joy. Explore it! Embrace it! Be proud you are looking for it! I personally always ask myself and my higher power, “What is my lesson?” Then, I shift what I am looking for to finding the answers I need. Keep in mind you will only find what you are looking for, so remember to look and listen for the answers. It’s a small but powerful tool. The inner peace alone you will find, as you look for your purpose, is worth any frustration along the way.

Know your life up to now has had its share of frustration. Don’t expect that to go away. You will just learn to deal with it differently. It’s is an amazing ride. Believe you are capable of living your life with purpose and know there are others who need to learn from you, just as you will continue to learn from others as you walk your path.

What resources do you recommend?
Inspiration:
I LOVE Maria Shriver’s “Sunday Paper.” She is so thought provoking and is always looking for answers. She interviews so many people living with purpose and shares their stories and interviews weekly along with her own thoughts. The Sunday Paper is a must on my list.
