Helping Us Find Tranquility in Everyday Life: Kimberly’s Purpose

Published on 06/20/2018

What is your life’s purpose?
To live a beautiful life that positively impacts all beings.

How are you living your purpose?
In 1999 I founded a yoga studio to help bring the practice to Washingtonians. Since 2004 I’ve written a blog, Tranquility du Jour, with tips on finding tranquility in every day and produced a podcast since 2005 with the same name and theme.

I surround myself with simple pleasures—fresh-cut flowers, rescue pugs, tea cups, journals, planners, perfume, creative tools, candles, plants. I design a locally-sewn, eco-friendly clothing line, TranquiliT, with a focus on mix-and-match clothing to make daily dress up easy. I’m also a psychotherapist in private practice and serve as President of Pigs & Pugs Project.

How did you find your purpose?
Originally from Oklahoma, I moved to Washington, DC in the mid ‘90s, eager to start my career. After quickly growing disenchanted with “adulting,” I started a yoga studio in my living room and began reading books like The Artist’s Way. As my interests and creative expression grew, I added in a clothing line, non-profit, books, and retreats.

I’m a lifelong learner, am enrolled in far too many courses, and like to repot myself as I outgrow where I’m planted. My purpose continues to evolve, especially with the launch of Pigs & Pugs Project—awareness raising plus micro grants to pig sanctuaries and pug rescues. My vision is to have a farmette outside DC to care for rescue pigs and pugs, grow veggies and flowers, and host delightful vegan events.

What advice do you have for purpose seekers?
Consider what you’d do if resources such as money and time weren’t an issue. Dabble in that pursuit. Give your purpose time to show itself to you without putting pressure on it. Explore ways to align your values with your work. Get comfortable with moving on, as needed. Just as a snake sheds its outgrown skin, it’s important that we do the same.
