What Makes for a Good Death?

Last week, I co-hosted a virtual Death Café with Certified Life-Cycle Celebrant Rebekka James via The Transition Network, a nonprofit serving women 50+. This was my third Death Café but my first virtual one.

What is a Death Café? Launched in 2010 by the late Jon Underwood, this international nonprofit brings people together in order to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.” Death cafés are led by volunteers and are not meant to provide grief support or counseling. There is no agenda, simply the intention to encourage conversation around a topic that is often not discussed openly, particularly in our Western culture.

Thanks to Zoom, 22 of us were able to move into small group breakouts  and share our fears and hopes around questions as varied as “what makes a good death?” and “what kind of legacy do I wish to leave behind?” and “how do I express love in every goodbye?”

As we went around and shared our final impressions, it was clear the Death Café experience had helped the participants feel heard and connected, enlightened and inspired.
