How Will You Remember This Past Year?

As the world begins to reopen, how will we look back on this past 1+ year? It will, of course, depend on our individual situations.

For some of us, it’s been a year of mourning the passing of loved ones, sometimes from afar—whether due to Covid or other causes. Of losing jobs or stalling careers, and growing financial insecurity. Of long hours and increasing despair for frontline workers. Of isolation, as we yearned for the curtailed gatherings and outings that Zoom simply can’t replace. Or, then again, of too much togetherness, with the ever-present noise and growing irritation of life and work in suddenly smaller quarters—and competing virtual meetings in the four corners of our homes. Of worsening depression and anxiety, not quelled by that pint of ice cream or that third glass of wine.

For others of us, it’s been a year of enjoying a new slower and quieter life. Of relishing the unexpected return of adult children, of cooking and playing together with family and “Covid pods.” Of self-care—I’ve heard of women who’ve gotten in the best shape of their lives! Of professional growth, embracing the technologies that allow us to connect remotely from all over the world. Of adopting and loving our fur babies who keep us company at home. Of starting on new hobbies, decluttering, and tackling home improvement and organization projects. Of growing appreciation and gratitude for our loved ones and our small pleasures in the midst of uncertainty.

And for most of us, it’s probably been a mix of all of the above—sometimes all in one day!

The Risk that Comes with Love

The Risk that Comes with Love

Today we lost our sweet cockapoo, Rocky. He'd been with us for close to 16 years and had serious health issues for the last two. As my sister Kat told me, your pup will let you know when it's time, and he did. He stopped eating, his breathing became labored, and he...
