Last week things went awry with my newsletter. I forgot to check all my links and, sure enough, found out two of them weren’t working. So I chose to send a second email with corrected links, knowing full well that this might lead to unsubscribes from annoyed subscribers (yep, 6 of them). Then I realized that the code that personalizes my greeting had somehow gotten messed up and everyone had received a Hi INSERT CODE HERE instead of their actual first name.
I was frustrated. My perfectionism was showing up big time. Then I asked myself: What would I say to a good friend in a similar situation?
That it’s no big deal. That most people did not care that there were two emails and had not even noticed the greeting mishap. That anyone who unsubscribed because of two emails was probably not that interested in what she had to say or offer. That she is human and humans make mistakes. That this doesn’t mean anything about who she is and her value in the world.
Often we are so much harder on ourselves than we would be on our friends (or even our enemies!).
YOUR TURN: How can you show yourself the kindness you show others? What are you beating yourself up over that you need to forgive and let go of?
